At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
